The New Girl by R. L. Stine Review

Where to even start with this story? Well, it opens with a murder/accident, hint it's actually a murder because jealous sister, before jumping forward in time to introduce us to the hero. Who is doing a hand/headstand while holding his tray in the school cafeteria that is until he sees the new girl, Anna, and promptly faceplants as ya do. Also, he has a bff who is the other girl in this love triangle, Lisa. Also, this book deals with a mental illness in the late 80s, early 90s so take that into consideration before reading it.

The characters are pretty dull with the hero being obsessed with the new girl, Anna, without having really talked to her and just having seen her for about a second. While being completely oblivious to the fact that Lisa is in love with him. He is so obsessed with Anna in fact that he is turning into a clutz and keeps making mistakes during his gymnastic meets and practice because he assumes he sees her watching him. He also bugs Lisa repeatedly about getting information from her about Anna, despite noticing that it annoys her. Not that I can blame her, I too would find it annoying if most of the conversations I had with a friend, crushing on them or not, was them wanting information on their latest obsession. Now, this may be because I am a demiromantic/sexual but I can’t really relate to this level of obsession. Then again I do know that there are people out there that become fixated on someone to a disturbing degree. His male friends find this whole obsession funny as hell.

Readers however will probably find this annoying as his only personality trait seems to be his obsession with Anna. Lucky for him however she eventually becomes just as obsessed with him to the point she threatens Lisa and goes with the whole if I can’t have you no one can. It’s like Fatal Attraction for kids! And while we are supposed to root for him to get together with Lisa I just found that couple just as boring as the supposedly main couple, largely because all of the conversations between the hero and Lisa are basically arguments about Anna. So I was just rooting for it to be over.

The book was a pretty quick read and boring. Which explains why I don’t really remember reading this one when I was younger.
