So, I read Lady of Secrets and it was pretty good. I got it when I was super into the series Bletchley Circle, which is about women who were code breakers in World War II solving mysteries. Anyways, the book really didn’t go that much into her being a spy, so that was a bit of a disappointment. And we are left hanging as to what happened to her two friends, Abby and Ruth and what happened to them after the war, even after the time jump. But I suspect that is going to be explained in their own books.
Anyways, the two main characters are Heneritta, a freed Black woman, and Elijah, an Irish immigrant. They have no meet cute. In the first chapter, they have already met. So, I am kinda salty about that. I love a good meet cute. The story is more focused on their relationship, which makes sense since it's a romance, than on the spy thing which barely gets a mention. Near the end, we have the love birds going to Alabama to rescue her cousin who ran away to join the war efforts from a prison camp. While there we meet Heneritta’s white grandfather and a few others who help them in the rescue mission. Then when it is over he declares that they shall be married. But then the book jumps forward some twenty years in the future and they have kids. We don’t learn about what happened when they got back to New York. We don’t learn how they got married in the south when interracial marriage was so far as I know illegal. Nor do we find out how Heneritta’s mother reacted to them being married instead of Heneritta getting married to Matthew the guy she was in an arranged marriage with at the time. Or how Heneritta’s uncle reacted to his son having run off to join the army and got captured. SO many threads left hanging. But at some point during the twenty-year time skip Henrietta met a lord and now owes him a favor in finding his son a bride? So yeah the book should have been longer and the threads tied up.
